A Fon fetiche, southern Togo.

Among the Fon people of southern Togo, small anthropomorphic ritual figures in the form of dolls or young children constitute a specific type of sacred object associated with personal protection, healing practices, and Vodun-related ritual activity. Such figures are commonly produced in the coastal cultural zone shared with neighboring Fon and Ewe communities.

Examples shaped as children typically present compact, frontal bodies. The torso is often short and cylindrical, while the legs are slightly separated and the arms appear straight or lightly bent against the body, reinforcing a stable vertical stance. The proportions frequently emphasize the head, which appears relatively large in relation to the body, reflecting symbolic associations with vitality and spiritual presence.

A regional stylistic feature is the childlike treatment of the face, with round or oval contours, small incised eyes, a short triangular nose, and a small horizontal mouth. The head may display incised linear grooves or small raised ridges indicating simplified coiffures typical of southern Togo carving traditions.

These figures often carry localized accumulations of ritual materials, including clay, plant matter, pigments, or oil-based substances applied during ritual use. Such additions may appear on the head, abdomen, or limbs, producing a textured and uneven surface that records the history of ritual interaction.

The resulting sculptures combine doll-like proportions, enlarged heads, and localized ritual encrustations, characteristics commonly observed in small-scale Fon ritual figures produced in the southern Togolese region.
