This magnificent large flower vase is a bold statement piece executed in Tsugaru-nuri (津軽塗) — one of Japan's most technically demanding and visually dramatic lacquerware traditions, designated as a National Traditional Craft (Dentō-teki Kōgeihin) of Aomori Prefecture in 1975.
The piece is executed in the Kara-nuri (唐塗 — "Chinese-style lacquer") technique, the most iconic and celebrated of the four classical Tsugaru-nuri styles.
The form is a commanding, full-bodied vase in the classic tsubo (壺) tradition: a generous ovoid body swells from a modest foot ring, rising through broad rounded shoulders to a short, waisted neck and a wide, softly everted collar rim.
The silhouette is immediately authoritative — there is a physical presence and weight to this vessel that commands any space in which it is placed.
The surface is the great spectacle of the piece.
The Kara-nuri technique creates its extraordinary effect through a multi-stage process: after the base lacquer coats are applied, nori-urushi (a lacquer paste) is stippled or dotted across the surface using a brush or fingertip to build up a raised, irregular texture of countless tiny convex islands.
Multiple further coats of contrasting lacquers — in this case, deep black, burning crimson-red, and warm amber-gold — are then applied in sequence and burnished flat.
The result is the appearance of a dense, organic mosaic: islands of deep crimson float against a black ground, with veins of glowing amber tracing between them like the cracks in volcanic rock or the patterns of tortoiseshell viewed through fire.
The surface is entirely covered — not one square millimetre is left unresolved — and the high gloss polish amplifies the three-dimensional depth, making the colors appear to glow from within.
The vase comes with a separate copper flower tube (otosu / 落とし — drop-in liner) in cylindrical form, aged with a warm terracotta-orange patina, designed to be dropped inside the neck of the vase for ikebana arrangements.
This functional and beautiful accessory confirms the piece was made and used as a serious flower vessel.

About Tsugaru-nuri
Tsugaru-nuri (津軽塗) is a lacquerware tradition with origins in the mid-Edo period (late 17th century), produced in the Tsugaru region of what is now Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan.
It was designated a National Traditional Craft Industry in 1975.
The tradition comprises four distinct techniques — Kara-nuri (唐塗), Nanako-nuri (七々子塗), Monsha-nuri (紋紗塗) and Kikkō-nuri (亀甲塗) — each producing its own characteristic surface pattern.
Of these, Kara-nuri is the most celebrated, requiring upward of 48 separate processes and taking many months to complete, with each stage demanding precise timing, temperature and humidity control.
The characteristic raised-dot texture is built up by applying lacquer with the fingertip, then overcoating and polishing repeatedly until the final surface reveals the hidden colour layers in the distinctive organic mosaic pattern that is Tsugaru-nuri's most recognisable signature.
