INTRODUCTION
A fine Shoowa raffia cloth panel from the Kuba group, distinguished by its well-balanced geometric design, strong contrast and beautifully preserved textile density. This is a classic example of the celebrated central African raffia cut-pile tradition.

CONTEXT / TECHNIQUE
Kuba raffia textiles are made on a raffia foundation woven by men and subsequently embroidered and worked by women, resulting in some of the most sophisticated textile traditions of Central Africa. Museum collections emphasize both the technical refinement of these works and their importance within clothing, exchange and dowry contexts.

DESIGN AND SURFACE
This example presents a strong all-over geometric composition of linked lozenges and stepped motifs, animated by a rich dark-on-warm-raffia contrast. The pattern is especially successful for its clarity and rhythm, while the surface retains a satisfying thickness and tactile presence. The reverse confirms the fineness of the embroidery through the small scale and regularity of the stitching.
