Description:
One natsume is a warm and natural example of Japanese wooden lacquerware, distinguished by its beautiful grain and subtle decorative inlay.
The form is a classic straight-sided cylindrical shape with a flat lid, creating a clean and balanced silhouette. Unlike black lacquer examples, this piece celebrates the natural character of the wood. The surface is finished in a transparent amber-brown lacquer that enhances the rich, vertical wood grain, giving the body depth and movement. The grain pattern runs elegantly around the vessel, emphasizing its cylindrical form.
Delicately inlaid motifs of slender leaves and small stems appear on both the lid and lower body. The inlay, likely rendered in a contrasting material such as raden (mother-of-pearl) , adds a gentle decorative accent without overwhelming the natural aesthetic. The placement feels light and asymmetrical, in keeping with refined tea ceremony sensibilities.
The impression is one of quiet sophistication—earthy, warm, and tactile. This natsume would suit a tea setting that values natural materials and understated seasonal decoration, allowing the beauty of the wood itself to remain the focal point.
The other one Japanese natsume (tea caddy) is characterized by its deep, dark lacquer finish and understated elegance, reflecting the refined simplicity valued in the aesthetics of the tea ceremony (chanoyu).
The caddy has a straight cylindrical form with gently rounded shoulders and a well-fitted lid, creating a balanced and harmonious silhouette. Its surface is finished in a dark brown to nearly black urushi lacquer, which subtly reveals the natural warmth of the underlying wood. The finish appears smooth and glossy along the body, while the top of the lid features a slightly textured wood grain surface, providing a gentle visual contrast.
This restrained decoration emphasizes the natural beauty of the material and the precision of craftsmanship rather than elaborate ornamentation. Such minimalist natsume are appreciated in tea practice for their calm presence and versatility, allowing them to harmonize with a wide variety of tea utensils and seasonal settings.
