卖家的描述
Item Description:
This is an antique Japanese bronze hexagonal hanging lantern (tsuri-dōrō / 吊灯篭) of distinguished design, featuring the Imperial sixteen-petal chrysanthemum (jūroku-ben kikka) motif on its fire-door panels — a design of the highest prestige in Japanese decorative arts.
The fire doors (hi-guchi tobira) of the lantern are adorned with chrysanthemum flower carvings; when the partially concealed petals behind the frame are counted, the design resolves into a full sixteen-petal Imperial chrysanthemum (jūroku-ben kiku).
Beneath the large decorative finial (hōju), a raised dome (kōmori) is fitted with three openwork cloud vents (kumosuke kemuri-dashi) for smoke release.
The hexagonal canopy (kasa) is formed in a six-petal flower shape, with cloud (kumo) motifs engraved along its underside.
The fire chamber (hibukuro) retains its original paper lining, while the transom (ranma) is decorated with cloud motifs and the infill panels (kōzama) carry wave (nami) patterns.
The feet are engraved with flowing arabesque (karakusa) designs.
Taken together, the decorative programme of this lantern — from crown to base — reflects a coherent and refined aesthetic sensibility of considerable quality.
A stately and rare example of antique Japanese bronze lanternwork, distinguished by its Imperial chrysanthemum motif.
Size
Height: 40 cm
Width: 30.5 cm
Condition
This piece shows age-related wear including dirt, scratches, rust, and hairline cracks; overall warping and bending is present due to the thin metal sheet construction. The paper lining has tears, the fire door latch is stiff and catches due to distortion, and the fire tray is missing.
