Qajar Lacquer Book Cover with Figural Miniature Scenes and Gilt Calligraphy – Inscribed “Amal” and Dated AH 1201
Attributed to late 18th – early 19th century (early Qajar period)
A finely executed lacquer book cover (binding boards), richly decorated with vivid miniature figural scenes framed by dense gilt calligraphic panels, as clearly visible in the photographs.
The central compositions depict dynamic heroic combat scenes rendered in a narrative miniature style, likely inspired by the Shahnameh epic tradition. The figures, animals, and landscape elements display strong characteristics associated with early lacquer painting.
The surrounding borders are filled with elegant gold calligraphy on a dark ground. An inscription including the word “amal” (work of) and a date reading “AH 1201” (1786–1787 CE) is visible within the calligraphic panel (see close-up photographs), suggesting early production, although its exact relation to the creation of the piece remains open to interpretation.
The interior features a dark lacquered finish, while the binding retains a visible leather spine, indicative of traditional construction and reinforcing the structural integrity of the cover.
Material: lacquered papier-mâché with leather spine (painted and gilt).
Estimated period: late 18th century, corresponding to the dated inscription AH 1201.
Condition: Condition consistent with age and use, with visible surface wear, craquelure, edge losses, and notable wear to the spine and inner surfaces; please refer to all photographs as an integral part of the description.
Dimensions:
Clearly visible in the photos, which form an integral part of the description.
