Item Description
"Yaegasumi" — Celadon Crackle Flower Vase, Tachikichi Kyoto
The Celadon: A Colour That Cannot Be Named
The celadon glaze that envelops this vase is not simply blue, nor simply green — it is both, and neither. In morning light it glows with a serene pale blue; under warmer light it deepens into a rich, saturated emerald. Move it toward sunlight and it shimmers like jade freshly drawn from a mountain stream. This is the ancient magic of true celadon — a colour that has enchanted emperors, tea masters, and collectors for over a thousand years, and which remains one of the most technically demanding achievements in the ceramic arts.
The Kanyū: Nature's Own Brushwork
Across every centimetre of this vase's surface, the glaze has fractured into a breathtaking mosaic of irregular fragments, each outlined by fine iron-brown lines that seem almost drawn by hand. No two pieces of this mosaic are alike; the pattern shifts and changes as the eye travels across the surface, sometimes suggesting dragonscales, sometimes the ice of a frozen lake, sometimes the veining of an ancient stone.
This magnificent spherical flower vase (花生, hana-ike) is a work of Tachikichi (橘吉), one of Japan's most prestigious ceramics houses, founded in Kyoto in 1752. Titled "Yaegasumi"(八重霞) — "layers upon layers of mist" — the name captures the ethereal, ever-shifting quality of its glaze.
Included: Original signed wooden box (共箱, tomobako) bearing the Tachikichi signature and red seal.
