Ritually Used Wooden Plate, Sentani Region (West Papua)

This exceptional wooden ceremonial plate originates from the Sentani region and bears a striking ancestral representation. At its center appears a carved ancestor head, flanked by two monitor lizards, animals of strong symbolic significance associated with power, protection, and the spirit world.

The sculptural composition is both bold and refined, reflecting the distinctive aesthetic of Sentani carving traditions. The dynamic interplay between the human ancestor and the flanking creatures suggests a deep connection between lineage, nature, and cosmology.

Plates of this type were used in ritual contexts and are rarely encountered, particularly with such a pronounced figurative program. A highly unusual and important piece, embodying both artistic mastery and cultural meaning.
