This is a Seto ware (瀬戸焼) Kuro-Oribe chawan (matcha tea bowl), accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako).
The bowl features a deep black glaze contrasted with areas of exposed clay and white slip, creating a simple yet powerful design. Its slightly irregular form reflects the aesthetic of wabi-sabi and embodies the spirit of traditional Japanese tea culture.
Natural variations from the firing process can be seen in the glaze, enhancing the depth and character of the piece. The glossy black surface contrasts beautifully with the earthy texture of the clay. The interior is finished with a rich black glaze, offering an elegant appearance when preparing matcha.
A maker’s mark can be found on the foot, and the tomobako is also inscribed.
Origin: Japan (Seto ware)
Material: Ceramic
Size:
Diameter: approx. 12 cm
Height: approx. 9 cm
Condition:
There are minor signs of age and use, as well as natural kiln effects such as glaze unevenness and small firing imperfections, all of which are typical and appreciated characteristics of this type of ware. There are no major cracks or chips, and the overall condition is good.
The lid of the wooden box shows slight warping.
This piece is suitable both for practical use in tea ceremony and as a collectible item.
