Item Description
Tachikichi (橘吉) — Tobe-yaki Porcelain Square Flower Vase with Polychrome Sometsuke Stripe Decoration
A striking and collectible piece from Tachikichi (橘吉), one of Japan's most respected tableware and ceramics houses, founded in Kyoto in 1752. The base bears the maker's mark 橘吉 (Tachikichi) in underglaze cobalt blue.
The form is a compact, flat-sided rectangular vessel with softly rounded corners and a distinctive stepped square neck — architecturally clean and thoroughly modern in character. The square opening at the top lends itself beautifully to ikebana arrangements using a single stem or small branch, as well as contemporary floral or dried flower display.
Three faces of the body are decorated in a bold rhythmic pattern of vertical stripes, each stripe formed by a paired leaf or seed motif rendered alternately in cobalt blue, deep burgundy/wine red, teal green, and iron black — a restrained palette applied with confident brushwork that animates the white porcelain ground. A broad wash of deep cobalt blue covers the fourth (back) face of the vessel, creating a strong graphic contrast and giving the piece a distinctly mid-century modern sensibility. The neck is glazed in a warm iron-brown (kaki) glaze that contrasts beautifully with both the white body below and the blue above.
The interior walls are unglazed white porcelain. The base is slightly recessed and bears the cobalt-blue maker's mark. The overall effect is one of controlled vivacity — traditional Japanese hand-painted decoration rendered in a vocabulary that sits as comfortably in a Scandinavian-influenced interior as it does in a traditional Japanese setting.
This piece is very likely produced at Tobe (砥部), Ehime Prefecture — one of Japan's foremost porcelain-producing regions, known for its thick, pure-white tobeware body and hand-painted blue-and-white or polychrome decoration. Tachikichi regularly collaborated with Tobe and other major Japanese ceramic production centres throughout the Showa period.
