A kavadi is a ceremonial burden or portable devotional shrine used in Hindu ritual processions and pilgrimage observances. It is carried by devotees as an act of penance, thanksgiving, or in fulfilment of a vow, particularly during festivals dedicated to Skanda/Murugan. Elaborately carved wooden examples such as the present piece were likely intended for temple use or ceremonial procession.
Skanda – also known in South India as Murugan, Subrahmanya or Karttikeya – is the Hindu god of war, victory, youth and divine protection. In Sri Lanka he is widely venerated as Kataragama, or Kataragama Deviyo, a deity revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions and associated with the celebrated shrine at Kataragama in the south of the island.
A fine and evocative example of 19th-century devotional wood carving from the Sinhalese/Tamil religious tradition, combining sculptural quality with important ritual significance.

Note, because of the angle of the camera, the Kavadi sometimes looks a bit bent which is not correct. It is in excellent straight condition.
