A refined and elegant mizusashi (fresh water container for the tea ceremony) crafted in the distinctive tradition of Oribe ware (Oribe-yaki), one of Japan's most celebrated and dynamic ceramic styles originating in the Mino region during the early Edo period. The vessel takes a classic cylindrical (tsutsugata) form and is adorned with painted floral motifs (hanamon) rendered beneath a lustrous green copper glaze (ryoku-yu), the hallmark of Oribe aesthetics. The emerald glaze flows and pools with characteristic depth, while the floral designs display the bold, free-spirited brushwork associated with the Oribe tradition — a style famously inspired by the tea master Furuta Oribe (1543–1615), a disciple of Sen no Rikyū.
The piece bears the potter's mark "Josuke" (Josuke-mei) and comes housed in its original wooden presentation box (kibako), confirming its status as a purposefully crafted tea-ceremony utensil of artistic merit. Josuke is a potter's mark (mei) associated with a craftsman working within the Oribe ware tradition of the Mino region (present-day Gifu Prefecture, Japan). Oribe ware, established under the influence of the great daimyo tea master Furuta Oribe in the early 17th century, is celebrated for its bold green copper glazes, dynamic painted motifs, and unconventional forms. Pieces bearing the Josuke mark are characterised by skilled wheel-thrown forms and expressive decorative glazing in keeping with the Oribe aesthetic. The work comes with a wooden box (kibako), attesting to its recognition as a piece of artistic and ceremonial significance.
