Item Description
Japanese Oni Demon Mask Ceramic Bottle with White Mane and Gold Fangs — Decorative Studio Pottery
This extraordinary ceramic bottle takes the form of a fearsome oni (鬼 Japanese demon) mask, combining the ancient iconography of Japanese folk religion with the functional form of a vessel. Boldly sculptural and visually commanding, it works equally as a decorative object, a conversation piece, or a collector's display item.
The face is rendered with remarkable three-dimensional intensity: a deeply furrowed brow with sharp chevron ridges, a bulbous crimson nose, wide-set golden eyes with black irises, and a gaping mouth bearing prominent gold-painted tusks. The entire surface is lacquered in a rich deep crimson with black shading pooled into the recesses, giving the face a dramatic chiaroscuro depth. A cascade of white natural fiber flows from the crown, secured by a red braided cord, framing the face with wild, otherworldly energy. The back of the piece is smooth and simply glazed in solid red — the functional reverse of the mask form — with a small opening at the top through which liquid can be poured, confirming its original design as a bottle.
In Japanese tradition, the oni is a creature of tremendous power — guardian of the underworld, enforcer of divine justice, and the iconic figure of the Setsubun demon-expelling ritual. The red oni in particular symbolises passion, strength, and fearless protection. Displayed on a shelf, mantle, or desk, this piece brings a striking charge of energy to any interior — from a Japanese-inspired space to a maximalist or curiosity-cabinet setting.
