Up for auction is a magnificent and rare bottle of Darmagi 1987, one of the most daring and legendary creations by maestro Angelo Gaja.
The History of "Darmagi":
The name of this wine literally means "What a shame!" in the Piedmontese dialect. This was the exclamation of disappointment from Angelo's father, Giovanni Gaja, when he discovered that his son had planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines in one of Barbaresco's most prestigious locations, historically suited to Nebbiolo. That "heretical" gamble has transformed into one of Italy's most celebrated, elegant, and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignons, demonstrating the extraordinary versatility of the Langhe terroir.
Tasting and Storage Notes:
The 1987 vintage of Darmagi has now reached full and fascinating maturity. It offers complex tertiary aromas of cassis, cigar box, leather, sweet spices, and underbrush, supported by the typical structure and minerality that the Piedmontese soil bestows on Cabernet.
The bottle up for auction comes from a private collection and has been stored in a temperature-controlled cellar. An unmissable piece for lovers of great Italian reds and for collectors of the Gaja family.
Critics' Scores (Robert Parker)
In the historical archives, the 1980s vintages of Darmagi were greeted with great enthusiasm by international critics, who saw this wine as "Italy's answer to the great Bordeaux crus."
• Robert Parker: "Darmagi vintages from the 1980s have historically been rated between 90 and 94 points by Robert Parker, establishing this Piedmontese Cabernet among the international elite."
