Item Description:
市野哲次 Ichino Tetsuji(1964–)
This elegant flower vase is a work by Ichino Tetsuji, a celebrated Tamba ware (Tamba-yaki) ceramicist working at Satoru Kiln (悟窯) in Tanba Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture.
The piece showcases Ichino's signature Saishoku-sen-zogan (彩色線象嵌) technique — a refined inlay method in which grooves are incised by hand into the clay body, then filled with colored slip to create intricate geometric and curvilinear patterns.
The result is a vessel of striking visual depth: bold yet delicate decorative lines flow across the surface in harmonious contrast with the warm, earthy Tamba clay beneath.
The vase stands at a substantial height, offering fine presence both as a display piece and as a functional flower arrangement vessel.
It comes with its original wooden box (tomobako), a booklet (shiori), and a storage cloth (tomobuno) — confirming its authenticity and adding to its collectible value.
Tamba ware is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with a history spanning over 800 years.
Ichino Tetsuji, a full member of the Japan Kogei Association (Nihon Kōgeikai), has exhibited at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition multiple times and received the Hyogo Prefecture Arts Encouragement Award, making this vase a meaningful acquisition for any collector of contemporary Japanese ceramics.

Artist Profile
Ichino Tetsuji (b. 1964) is a contemporary Tamba ware ceramicist based at Satoru Kiln (悟窯) in Tanba Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. He graduated from the ceramics department of Saga University of Art (Sagabi Jutsu Tandai), and is a full member of the Japan Kogei Association (Nihon Kōgeikai). Ichino is renowned for his mastery of the saishoku-sen-zogan (colored line inlay) technique — a painstaking process in which freehand lines and geometric patterns are carved into the clay and filled with colored slip to create extraordinary decorative surfaces. His work has been selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition on numerous occasions (1997, 1998–2003, 2006, 2008, 2009), and he has held solo exhibitions at prestigious venues including Daimaru Kobe, Hankyu Umeda Honten, and Niigata Mitsukoshi.
