Silver jubilee protocol cup associated with the Royal House of Romania

SILVER CEREMONIAL PRESENTATION CUP
Chernivtsi, June 8, 1939
King Carol I University

Extended title

A large ceremonial silver presentation cup issued by the Municipality of Chernivtsi on the occasion of King’s Day, June 8, 1939, associated with King Carol I University, bearing official municipal and Romanian state heraldic emblems.

Description

Impressive ceremonial presentation cup in solid silver (800 standard), belonging to the category of officially commissioned commemorative objects of the Romanian interwar period.
The piece is executed in cast and chased silver, richly decorated with vegetal motifs and heraldic relief compositions:
obverse: the interwar coat of arms of Chernivtsi Municipality (fortified gate with towers, rosette and mural crown);
reverse: a stylized representation of the Romanian state emblem, featuring the heraldic eagle superimposed on a cross inspired by the Order of Michael the Brave, with the composite shield of the historical provinces.
The upper band is inscribed “Municipiul Cernăuți”, while the base bears the engraved date “June 8, 1939”.

Historical context

June 8 coincides with the anniversary of King Carol II, celebrated at the time as "King's Day", one of the main official holidays of the Romanian state.
In this context, public institutions - local administrations, universities, the army - organized solemn ceremonies, parades and academic festivities, during which prestigious awards and commemorative objects were offered.
The University of Cernăuți, renamed after 1918 "King Carol I University", represented one of the most important academic centers of Greater Romania, being directly integrated into the institutional system of the state and actively participating in the official ceremonial.

Interpretation

Due to its characteristics, the piece falls into the category of: official ceremonial objects of representation (state and university protocol).

Most likely, the cup was:
awarded as a trophy or distinction during a university ceremony;
used as a protocol piece during official receptions;
made as a commemorative object dedicated to King's Day.

Heraldic analysis

The piece presents an extremely relevant combination:

The coat of arms of the municipality of Chernivtsi:
symbolizes the autonomy and local administrative authority;
reflects the status of an important municipality of Bukovina.

The emblem of the Romanian state (simplified version):
the crusading eagle → the sovereignty of the state;
the cross of the Order of "Mihai the Brave" → military honor and royalty;
the central shield → the unity of the provinces of Greater Romania.

This association indicates an official order, not a decorative one, specific to objects of institutional rank.

Provenance

Private collection.
Acquired approximately 40 years ago from the Rector of Chernivtsi University.

Technical details

Material: silver (800 standard)
Weight: approx. 843 g
Height: approx. 33 cm

A rare and historically significant artifact of Greater Romania, combining academic, municipal, and royal symbolism.
