Item Description
瑞峰 Zuiho — Bronze Incense Burner (Koro) with Vine and Leaf Relief, Three-Legged Form
A refined and substantial bronze incense burner (koro) by Zuiho, a metalwork artist working in the Takaoka Copperware (Takaoka Doki) tradition — one of Japan's most celebrated centres of cast bronze craftsmanship, with a history spanning over 400 years. This piece was formerly used by a grand master of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony during practice sessions, lending it a distinguished provenance rooted in the living tradition of Japanese tea culture.
The burner takes the classic Chinese-inspired tripod form (三足香炉), with three tall, square-section legs elevating the rounded body with quiet authority. Two flat, rectangular handles project horizontally from the shoulders, echoing the elegant restraint of classical bronze ritual vessels. The body is cast in dark, patinated bronze with a smooth, burnished finish that deepens to near-black at the upper surface.
The defining decorative feature is a horizontal band of high-relief casting encircling the widest point of the body, depicting a continuous scroll of vines, tendrils and leaves — rendered with crisp detail that speaks to the precision of Takaoka casting technique. The domed, openwork lid is pierced with sixteen radial slots to allow incense smoke to escape, topped by a finely cast floral knop. Viewed from above, the lid presents a wheel-like pattern of great geometric elegance.
The piece comes with its original wooden box (tomobako), bearing the artist's handwritten inscription and personal seal.
