Male Ibeji Figure – Yoruba, Oyo, Nigeria – Ex Merton D. Simpson Collection

Details
Origin: Yoruba people, Igbuke style, Oyo region
Country: Nigeria
Materials: Wood, glass beads
Height: 28.5 cm
Provenance: Ex Merton D. Simpson collection
Presumed age: Early 20th century

Description
Fine male Ibeji figure carved in wood and adorned with a waist belt of glass beads. This elegant example displays the balanced proportions and refined presence characteristic of Yoruba twin figures, with a calm frontal stance, hands resting on the hips, and a sensitively carved face with a long nose, almond-shaped eyes, and finely incised coiffure.

The figure shows a beautiful caramel-coloured patina developed through handling and ritual use. The style may be related to the Igbuke workshops of the Oyo area. An old collection number, “9-0009”, is still visible under the base.

Comparable examples are illustrated in IBEJI: The Cult of Yoruba Twins by George Chemeche, 5 Continents Editions, 2003, p. 71.

A fine early Ibeji with strong presence, good age, and excellent provenance.

Condition
Good overall condition, with age-related wear, surface rubbing, small losses, and minor cracks consistent with age and use. Old collection number under the base. Please refer to the photos for details.

Included
The figure only. No stand included.
