Title
Turkana Milk Container (“Elephit”) – Kenya – Wood & Cord – Mid-20th century
Details
Origin: Turkana people
Country: Kenya
Materials: Wood, cord
Dimensions: H 33 cm
Period: 1960s (presumed)
Provenance: Collected in situ by the present owner in the 1990s
Description
Fine Turkana milk container, or elephit, carved in a clean cylindrical form and decorated with an elegant pattern of burned dark areas and rows of small punched dots. The surface shows a beautiful, warm use patina, giving the object both authenticity and strong decorative presence.
This example stands out for the quality of its proportions, the subtlety of its decoration, and the presence of a finely braided attachment. A small indigenous stitched repair adds to its character and speaks to a life of practical use. A very appealing ethnographic vessel, both functional and sculptural.
Condition
Wear, scratches, and surface marks consistent with age and use. Small old stitched repair. Overall good condition, with very good presence. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The container only.
