Satchin

Signed,Nobuyoshi Araki
Kawadeshobou/2017/Japanese/210*220*8

“Satchin: Original Edition,” a photo book by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan’s leading photographers. Araki, who has been active since the 1960s and has published some 500 photo books to date, first came to public attention through the “Taiyo Award.” This photography prize was established by the graphic magazine *Taiyo*, published by Heibonsha, and was dedicated to documentary photo series. Araki was the winner of the first edition of this award in 1964 (at the time, his name was written in hiragana as “Nobuyoshi”). While attending Chiba University, Araki met Satchin, a fourth-grade elementary school student, in a reinforced concrete apartment in Mikawajima, Arakawa Ward. The lively expressions and innocent demeanor of Satchin and several other children evoke a sense of nostalgia and bring to mind the atmosphere and way of life of that era. Published by Shinchosha in 1994, *Satchin* is composed of outtakes from the *Taiyo Award* entries, and this book—or rather, the photographs contained within—is, quite literally, Araki’s “legendary debut work.” The original negatives were lost after being submitted for publication, and as Araki notes in the afterword, “This time, we’ve managed to recreate the images from old magazines and publish *Satchin*, the work that won the *Taiyo Award*.”
