卖家的描述
Terracotta pouring vessel – Bamileke – Cameroon – Mid-20th century
Details
Origin: Bamileke people
Country: Cameroon
Materials: Terracotta
Dimensions: H 29 cm
Period: Mid-20th century
Provenance: Collected in situ by the present owner in Cameroon in the early 1990s
Description
A fine Bamileke terracotta pouring vessel of generous size, notable for its strong construction, rounded volume, and thick crusty old surface. The form is particularly satisfying, with a broad ovoid body, a flared neck, and a robust handle that gives the piece both balance and presence.
While the exact original use of this type of vessel is difficult to define with certainty, comparable Bamileke ceramics are associated with domestic and serving functions, including water and storage vessels. This example stands out above all for the quality of its presence: the dense smoky surface, the quiet power of the silhouette, and the rarity of such a well-preserved terracotta form.
A handsome and authentic Grassfields ceramic, collected in situ, with excellent age and strong decorative appeal.
Condition
Old wear, encrustation, and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Stable crack to the neck. Remarkably intact overall for a terracotta vessel. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The vessel and the fiber ring shown in the photographs are included.
