Item Description

This exquisite three-drawer cabinet showcases the traditional Japanese art of Kamakura-Bori, a lacquerware technique with an 800-year heritage originating in Kamakura during the medieval period. The piece features masterfully hand-carved peony motifs in deep relief, a symbol of prosperity and honor in Japanese culture. Each drawer front displays intricate floral designs with bold, sculptural carving characteristic of this celebrated craft.
Kamakura-Bori developed when Buddhist sculptors adapted Chinese carved lacquer techniques, creating a distinctly Japanese aesthetic by carving into wood rather than built-up lacquer layers. The rich reddish-brown finish is achieved through multiple applications of traditional urushi lacquer in black and vermillion, carefully polished to reveal the layered colors beneath and create depth and luminosity.
The cabinet's compact size makes it ideal for storing jewelry, stationery, or precious small items, while its decorative presence enhances any interior with authentic Japanese craftsmanship. The geometric side panels complement the organic peony carvings, demonstrating the harmony of form and function central to Japanese design philosophy. This piece represents both practical storage and decorative art, embodying centuries of refined technique passed down through generations of master craftsmen.
