TAPIO WIRKKALA (1915-1985) rose to world fame in the early 1950s following the breakthrough of Finnish industrial design at the triennial Milan fairs of 1951 and 1954. Wirkkala was an exceptionally versatile artist who was not held back in any design project by challenges of scale, materials, or conventions. He was a sculptor and designer who became best known as a glass artist, though his artistry ranged from postage stamps to drinking glasses, from furniture to domestic appliances, from a full-sized landscape memorial to a futuristic cityscape. The sources of inspiration for Wirkkala’s work were the powerful shapes of natural phenomena, where form and function merge. Form and shape were not simply an aesthetic goal or intellectual perception for him—rather they were born from the fusion of thinking, reflecting, seeing, and handcrafting. Tapio Wirkkala was one the leading figures of mid-century modern Scandinavian design.
