Fujii Shumei (1936–2017) was a renowned ceramic artist from Arita (Saga Prefecture), a historic centre of Japanese porcelain. After early work in a porcelain workshop, he founded his own kiln, Shumeigama, in 1974. His work blends traditional Arita techniques with a modern aesthetic sensibility. He mastered underglaze blue, engraving, and especially his signature konoha‑gihō (“leaf technique”). He exhibited at major national competitions such as Nitten and the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, receiving numerous awards.
