卖家的描述
Ancient Bronze Ring Collection (3) – Roman, Byzantine and Medieval Periods, ca. 2nd–13th Century AD
A carefully assembled group of three bronze rings spanning much of the first millennium and extending into the medieval period, selected to illustrate the continuity of personal adornment and symbolic ornament across Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The lot includes a Roman bronze signet ring engraved with Mercury, a geometric bezel ring of Late Roman / Byzantine tradition, and a small ring set with a pale green glass or stone cabochon.
1. Roman Bronze Signet Ring with Mercury
Roman Empire, ca. 2nd–4th century CE
Bronze signet ring with expanding shoulders and circular bezel engraved with a standing figure identified as the god Mercury, shown holding a caduceus and marsupium. Mercury, patron of commerce, travellers, communication, luck, and financial success, was a popular protective and auspicious figure in Roman personal jewelry.
The hoop is broken, though the engraved bezel remains well preserved and clearly legible.
Weight: 6.47 g
Ring size: not measurable due to break
Condition: broken; surface wear and earthen encrustation; stable dark patina.
2. Geometric Bronze Bezel Ring
Late Roman / Byzantine / Early Medieval, ca. 5th–10th century CE
Bronze ring with oval bezel engraved in an abstract geometric lattice composed of recessed panels and punched-dot ornament. Such decorative motifs persisted from the Late Roman world into Byzantine and early medieval metalwork traditions.
Weight: 3.67 g
Inner diameter: 16.6–17.2 mm
Approx. US size: 6¼–7
Approx. EU size: 53–55
Condition consistent with age, showing attractive dark patina and minor surface wear.
3. Bronze Ring with Green Glass or Stone Setting
Late Antique / Medieval Period, ca. 6th–13th century CE
Small bronze ring set with a pale green translucent cabochon, possibly glass or soft stone. The simple collet mounting and restrained form are characteristic of late antique to medieval personal jewelry traditions.
Weight: 2.06 g
Inner diameter: 14.5–15.5 mm
Approx. US size: 3¼–4¾
Approx. EU size: 45–49
With surface wear, encrustation, and minor losses around the setting.
Condition
Overall preserved in excavated condition with ancient patina, earthen deposits, and expected age-related wear. No modern repairs observed aside from ancient damage to the Roman Mercury ring.
Provenance:
Acquired from a private European collection, established in the late 1980s. A signed certificate of authenticity can be provided in PDF format upon request.
FINAL NOTES
Authentic ancient artifacts
Clean, readable typology
Strong thematic coherence as a group
Particularly attractive as a single lot offering variety and historical depth
