Kutani Ware Vase by Eihō (栄峰) — Aochibu Karakusa (Blue Dot Arabesque) Pattern with Gold Painting, Shōwa Period
A magnificent and richly ornamented Kutani-yaki porcelain vase by the Shōwa-period master potter and decorator Eihō (栄峰), featuring the highly demanding aochibu (青粒, "blue dot") technique combined with elaborate gold-painted karakusa (唐草, arabesque scroll) and floral motifs.
The body of the vase is densely covered with thousands of meticulously hand-applied tiny raised turquoise-blue dots arrayed across a deep black ground, creating a shimmering, almost textile-like surface that catches the light from every angle.
Over this aochibu ground, the artist has painted golden arabesque scrolls and stylized blossoms in moriage (raised) gold, and the shoulder is decorated with a band of seigaiha (青海波, blue ocean wave) motifs in gold — a deeply auspicious traditional Japanese pattern symbolizing peaceful, ever-flowing fortune.
The neck is finished with a broad band of pure gold, the foot is bordered with fine gold lines, and the interior shows a beautiful pale ivory crackle (kannyū) glaze characteristic of fine Kutani porcelain.
The base is signed in red overglaze with the artist's mark "Kutani Eihō" (九谷 栄峰), and the vase is accompanied by its original wood storage box (tomobako) — a strong attestation of authenticity and the artist's pride in the work.
The aochibu technique is one of the most technically demanding traditions of Kutani ware, requiring the artist to apply each tiny dot individually by hand with absolute regularity of size and spacing — work that can take weeks or months to complete on a single vessel of this scale.
This vase is an excellent representative example of the technique and would make a wonderful centrepiece for a tokonoma alcove, a display cabinet, or any refined interior with an appreciation for Japanese decorative arts.

Cultural & Historical Background
Kutani ware (Kutani-yaki 九谷焼) is one of Japan's most celebrated overglaze porcelain traditions, originating in the early Edo period (mid-17th century) in present-day Ishikawa Prefecture. After a brief decline, the tradition was magnificently revived in the early 19th century and continues today as a designated traditional craft of Japan.
The aochibu (青粒, "blue dot") technique was developed and popularized in the late Meiji period and remains one of the most technically demanding Kutani decorative methods. Each dot must be applied individually by hand using a fine brush, with the artist maintaining perfectly uniform size and spacing across the entire surface — a slow, meditative process requiring exceptional skill and patience.
When combined with moriage gold painting and the karakusa arabesque motif, as in this vase, the result is a highly elaborate and prestigious style traditionally favoured for presentation pieces, ceremonial objects, and objects intended for the tokonoma alcove of formal Japanese reception rooms.
The original signed paulownia tomobako that accompanies the work is the traditional Japanese means of authentication and storage for fine ceramics, and considerably enhances the documentary value of the piece.
