“Trench Art” 打火机
The Trench Art lighter is a portable, hand-made fire-starting device typical of armed conflicts in the first half of the 20th century (especially World War I). These objects represent a form of creative recycling of war materials by soldiers or local artisans.
The piece is made entirely of brass, with a cylindrical main body. The outer surface has horizontal grooves (relief bands), which serve both an aesthetic and functional role, providing better grip during use.
Upper part: Houses the ignition mechanism composed of a flint wheel mounted on a vertical support, a wick holder and a snuffer cap designed to extinguish the flame and preserve the fuel.
Base: It has a concave design and is equipped with two slotted screws: a large one for filling the tank with gasoline and a smaller one, equipped with a spring, for inserting the lighter flint.
This specific model does not show industrial markings, which indicates an artisanal origin. During the wars, soldiers used empty cartridge tubes, projectile remains or other metal components to manufacture robust lighters, capable of operating in frontline conditions (wind, humidity). The design is pragmatic, focused on durability and ease of repair.
The lighter uses a classic combustion system:
Fuel: Light gasoline (petrol) stored in the tank filled with cotton wool.
Ignition: The spark produced by rubbing the wheel against a ferrocerium flint ignites the exposed wick.
Maintenance: The parts are completely removable by unscrewing, allowing easy replacement of consumables (wick, stone, fuel)
