Item Description
This elegant Kutani ware flower vase exemplifies the refined decorative traditions of one of Japan's most celebrated porcelain schools. The cylindrical body, gracefully tapering toward the base, is adorned in a deep black ground enriched with meticulously applied ao-chibu (blue-green dot) work — a hallmark technique of Kutani artisans in which countless tiny emerald-green dots are individually hand-painted to create a lush, textured field across the entire surface.
Against this intricate dotted ground, flowing gold kin-sai (gold overglaze) motifs bloom in exuberant profusion: large chrysanthemum blossoms alternate with elegant tessen (clematis vine) scrolls, rendered with confident brushwork in gleaming gold. The upper shoulder of the vase features a distinct band of finely detailed gold seigaiha (overlapping wave/scale) patterning, while twin gold-tipped ear handles (mimi) flank either side, adding a classical sculptural accent. Triple gold horizontal bands delineate the upper and lower registers, lending the composition a stately, architecturally balanced quality.
The interior and base are finished in matte black glaze, with a red seal mark impressed on the foot. This piece is entirely suitable for ikebana (flower arrangement) and kadō (the way of flowers), and would make a distinguished decorative statement in any refined interior setting.
Kutani ware (Kutani-yaki) originates from the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, and has been produced since the mid-17th century. Distinguished by its vivid overglaze enamels and gold painting, Kutani porcelain is renowned internationally for its bold, luxurious aesthetic.
