A captivating Japanese ceramic bud vase featuring a stunning flame-effect glaze known as Shinsha-yu (copper-red glaze), displaying a breathtaking spectrum of colors across its surface. The glaze transitions dramatically from deep crimson and burgundy at the base, through vivid amber and golden yellow at the belly, into olive green along the shoulder, and finally to soft lavender-blue at the rim — an effect achieved through precise copper-oxide reduction firing. This phenomenon, sometimes called Kōsai-yaki (rainbow-fired ware), results from the interaction of copper in the glaze under varying kiln atmospheres, creating a unique, unrepeatable work of art.
The vase presents a graceful teardrop silhouette with a rounded, swelling body tapering up to a long, slender neck with a gently flared mouth. The interior of the neck is coated with a spotted teal-blue glaze, adding a jewel-like detail to the piece. The unglazed white footring shows clean porcelain body. This type of glaze — oxblood red (gyu-ketsuko), flame red (kaen-ko), and blue-purple haze — represents one of the most technically demanding achievements in traditional East Asian ceramics, requiring precise control of kiln temperature, reduction atmosphere, glaze thickness, and clay body.
