MASQUE GALOA DU GABON
Among the Okukwé masks of Gabon’s maritime region, the Galoa works stand out with a particularly recognizable style. The Galoa, established along the Ogooué river downstream of Lambaréné, are often called “the people of the lakes.” Today, they live mixed with southern Fang as well as with other small Mèné groups.

In terms of form, the Galoa style is characterized by an oval face with harmonious and regular shapes, dominated by a slightly convex forehead. The eyes, coffee bean-shaped, are marked by heavy eyelids almost closed. The nose is straight and often fine, while the mouth sketches a slight smile. The decoration, composed of opposite black and ochre triangles on the forehead and chin, stands out on a white background. This color, associated with spirits, has a beneficial value here, whereas black recalls death.

The mask, called Ezogha, Tata-Mpolo or Ezoma-Zanomi “the great chief” by women and foreigners, largely belongs to the male sphere.

As with many masks in Gabon, the Okukwé rhythms village life. It accompanies major events, such as the funerals of important figures, the birth of twins, or initiation rites, while contributing to the maintenance of social order.
