卖家的描述
Pataikos 护符。
Ancient Egypt, Late Period, 664 - 332 BC
Faience
6,7 cm height.
Provenance: Private collection, Germany, 1960.
Condition: Good, see photos.
Amulets depicting Patekos were popular in ancient Egypt, especially during the Late Period. Patekos was a dwarf god associated with protection, closely linked to the powerful child god Horus. These small amulets were usually made of faience, bronze, or stone and were worn as protective charms against danger, illness, and harmful forces.
One striking iconographic type shows Patekos standing triumphantly on crocodiles. In Egyptian symbolism, crocodiles represented chaos and potential threats, often connected with the god Sobek but also with uncontrolled natural forces. By standing upon them, Patekos demonstrates his dominance over dangerous creatures and his ability to neutralize evil. This posture visually communicates protection and divine control over hostile powers.
Another important feature is the scarab placed on his head. The scarab beetle was associated with the god Khepri, a solar deity symbolizing rebirth and transformation. The scarab on Patekos’ head reinforces themes of regeneration and cosmic renewal, combining protective and solar symbolism in a single image.
Together, these elements create a powerful amuletic figure. The image of Patekos standing on crocodiles with a scarab above him functioned as a compact symbol of protection, rebirth, and divine strength in everyday Egyptian life.
