Pair of Tibetan-Mongolian Buddhist Votive Images – Late 19th Century
A rare pair of antique Buddhist devotional images from the Tibetan-Mongolian cultural area, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
The works depict two sacred standing figures from the Himalayan Buddhist pantheon, probably bodhisattvas or manifestations related to Tara/Avalokiteshvara worship, represented among stylized clouds according to traditional Lamaist iconography.
Executed using a printed matrix technique (likely woodblock printing) with hand-applied pigments. Original colors — green, red and ochre — remain visible despite the natural wear and aging. The pair is glued on a paper.
Provenance
Acquired from a gallery specialized in Himalayan art.
Details
Period: late 19th century
Origin: Tibet / Mongolia
Technique: devotional print with hand coloring
Material: antique paper
Dimensions: approx. 7–8 cm each
Condition: age-related wear, abrasions, small losses, folds and surface marks consistent with age and devotional use
These images were likely intended for private religious practice, domestic altars, or Buddhist meditation rituals.
Authentic and evocative pieces with strong spiritual and ethnographic character, ideal for collectors of Himalayan art, Tibetan Buddhism and Asian ritual objects.
