Small ceramic or clay figure representing a wild boar or pig. Defined eyes and marked mouth, slightly upturned snout with two small openings, hair crest on the front part of the back, rounded ears and wriggled tail. It rests on a continuous base where the legs are barely delineated. Lower perforation.
Dimensions: 94 mm long x 37.5 mm wide x 66 mm high. Weight: 110 g.

State of conservation: very good, no restorations. Some surface color suggests it may have been painted or plastered.

Possible votive figure or children's toy. This type of votive figurines are present in Greek, Etruscan and Roman culture. Between the 9th and 1st centuries BC, the Etruscans and, later, the Romans, frequently produced terracotta boars (often identified by a crest or “mane” on the back) as votive offerings. Similar figures from the Sanctuary of Calvi, in Italy, include both “boars” and “pigs.” Greek ritual objects or toys: In archaic Greece (6th–5th centuries BC), small terracotta boars or pigs were made as children's toys or ritual rattle toys (askoi) for ceremonies.
