Vintage Japanese Marine Sextant by Nippon Sokki Co., Ltd. (NSK), Kobe - Manufactured February 18, 1949 - With Original NSK Certificate, Tamaya Ginza Examination Certificate (1956), Original Wood Box, and Accessories
A wonderfully preserved vintage Japanese marine sextant manufactured by Nippon Sokki & Co., Ltd. (日本測器株式会社 / "NSK") of Kobe, Japan - one of the most respected names in mid-20th century Japanese precision optical instruments.
This is a genuine working-class maritime navigation instrument from the immediate post-war period, dated February 18, 1949 (Showa 24) according to the original NSK manufacturer's certificate of examination affixed to the inside lid of the original wooden case.
The sextant was subsequently re-examined and certified by the legendary Tamaya & Co., Ltd. of Ginza, Tokyo - Japan's most prestigious maker of marine instruments - on April 7, 1956.
The original Tamaya certificate of examination (六分儀検定表 / "Certificate of Examination") is preserved in the case alongside the NSK certificate, documenting the instrument's correction values across the entire 15° to 120° range of the arc.
The sextant itself is a classic professional design:
Grey-painted cast frame with the distinctive openwork "skeleton" structure designed to combine strength with light weight
Polished brass arc with engraved silver-inlaid degree scale
Hand-stamped "NSK" maker's mark and serial number "1280" on the arc
Brass index arm with vernier scale and magnifying lens
Brass observation telescope with multiple eyepieces and shade filters (multiple included as accessories)
Index mirror, horizon mirror, and adjustable sun shades (dark glass and blue glass filters)
Wooden handle on the back of the frame
All moving parts function smoothly
The combination of the grey-painted frame, polished brass scope, and brass scale work creates a striking visual effect that is both functionally pure and aesthetically beautiful - the essence of mid-20th century Japanese precision instrument design.
Stored in its original wood hinged case with brass corner reinforcements, brass hardware, and inset carrying handle.
The original key is no longer present.
A genuine piece of Japanese maritime history, dating from the period of Japan's post-war reconstruction when the country's optical and precision instrument industries were rebuilding world-class capabilities.
Equally suited for a serious collector of marine and navigation instruments, for nautical-themed interior design, or as a striking historical conversation piece for a study, library, or maritime-themed space.
