Old Sepik River Mask with Crocodile Ornaments – Mid-20th Century
A striking old ceremonial mask from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, dating to the mid-20th century. The mask is richly decorated with carved crocodile ornaments, reflecting the profound importance of the crocodile in Sepik cosmology, mythology, and ceremonial life.
Expertly carved from a single piece of wood, the mask displays a powerful expression and an appealing surface patina developed through decades of ritual use. The crocodile motifs symbolize strength, ancestral power, and the close spiritual relationship between Sepik communities and the river environment upon which their lives depend.
Evidence of long ceremonial use is visible throughout the piece. Minor damage and wear are present, entirely consistent with its age and traditional use, and should be regarded as part of its authentic history rather than a defect. Such signs of use add character and testify to the object’s active role in village ceremonies and performances.
Masks of this type were worn during important ritual occasions, dances, initiations, and community celebrations. The combination of expressive carving, traditional ornamentation, and genuine age makes this an attractive example for collectors of Oceanic art and ethnographic material.
