Old Sepik River Mask with Crocodile Ornaments – Mid-20th Century

A striking old ceremonial mask from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, dating to the mid-20th century. The mask is richly decorated with carved crocodile ornaments, reflecting the profound importance of the crocodile in Sepik cosmology, mythology, and ceremonial life.

Expertly carved from a single piece of wood, the mask displays a powerful expression and an appealing surface patina developed through decades of ritual use.
