This tea caddy is made entirely with Japanese domestic Urushi lacquer, which accounts for less than 10% of the self-sufficiency rate in Japan, with around 70% of that domestic lacquer produced around Johoji Town, Iwate Prefecture. While Johoji ware is basically characterized by solid single colors of black, Hon-shu (red), and Tame (amber) without extra decoration, this piece features cherry blossoms and maple trees depicted in Makie, with Raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay in parts.
Artist Profile:
An artisan based in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. He protected traditional techniques and pursued the form of lacquerware for daily use.
