Item Description
清栄 Seiei (Kutani)
This exquisite Kutani-ware flower vase, signed "Kutani Seiei" on the base, showcases the bold and vibrant overglaze painting tradition that has defined Kutani ceramics for over three centuries. The globular vessel is adorned with a magnificent panoramic scene of a peacock (kujaku) in full plumage, rendered in rich jewel tones of emerald, cobalt blue, and burnt orange, set amidst lush blossoms of peonies (botan) and chrysanthemums in vivid red and lime green. The neck of the vase is encircled by an intricate dark blue and gold arabesque band, while a fine gold rim crowns the wide mouth and a terracotta-red line borders the foot. The ivory crackle-glaze ground (kannyu) lends an elegant warmth, beautifully contrasting with the richly colored decoration. The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (kiri-bako), lid inscribed with the title "Ohanavbin" (御花瓶) and bearing the artist's seal "Seiei," along with a printed pamphlet detailing the history of Kutani ware.
Size
Height: 22 cm
Width (diameter): 22 cm
Weight
1,367 g
Condition
The vase is in very good condition with no significant chips or cracks; minor surface scuffs consistent with age are present, and a small glaze chip is visible on the decorative neck band. The original wooden box shows age-related wear.
Artist Profile
清栄 Seiei is a Kutani-ware kiln/artist name associated with the traditional porcelain-producing region of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.
