As reported by the advertisements of the era: "when someone beats Sony, it’s always Sony", the Sony EL 7 is truly as close as one can get to an open-reel recorder in listening terms.
An innovation that combined the fidelity of reel-to-reel recorders with the practicality and convenience of a compact unit.
Personally, I must say the sound is exceptional and a piece for true connoisseurs and collectors.
In fact, the reels’ size and the 9.5 cm/s playback speed are the same as reel tapes and represent the Sony EL 7’s secret.
A real delight to the eyes and ears!
Note
For accuracy, it should be noted, as visible in the photos, a small scratch on the lower left edge of the front panel and some light marks on the upper aluminum flange of the case due to overlap with other electronics. In particular, the front scratch of about one centimeter is visible only from certain angles and in backlight.
Another indication I want to provide to the future buyer concerns the correct operation of the device. In particular, as recommended by Sony itself, the cassette tape must always be kept taut. To this end, a small tool similar to a screwdriver was provided to manually perform this procedure. It is advisable to check with each winding or fast-forward operation that the tape is always properly tensioned to avoid tangling inside the cassette.
