Popy 1974 First Edition Great Mazinger Showa Era Soft Vinyl Figure
Basic Information:
Production Year: 1974. Released in Japan around the same time as the premiere of the Great Mazinger anime, this original version is a Showa era vintage toy, over 50 years old. At this time, Popy had not yet been acquired by Bandai, making this a genuine first release during the brand's independent operation.
Production Brand: Popy (ポピー), a Japanese manufacturer of soft vinyl figures for mecha and tokusatsu (special effects) toys in the 1970s. It features a distinctive oval-shaped embossed Popy brand stamp on its waist and abdomen, and the soles are engraved with the logos of Go Nagai Dynamics and Toei Animation.
Character Name: Great Mazinger (also known as Great Mazinger, the main mecha in the sequel to Mazinger Z)
Material and Craftsmanship: The entire body is made of hollow Sofubi soft vinyl, a classic material used in Showa-era robot toys. The main body is molded in one piece and then hand-painted with multi-colored paint. The waist and arms are movable, and the joints are gearless, relying on the elasticity of the soft vinyl itself for articulation.
Origin & Size: Made in Japan; 145x75x35mm
Condition Details: This is an authentic 1970s model, without any repainting or restoration. The paint shows natural wear and tear over time; the gradient gold layer on the arms and legs has worn away in several places. The torso and head show minor paint chipping and signs of dust accumulation. The soft plastic body is free of cracks, broken limbs, perforations, or other serious damage. The joints maintain the original tightness of an old toy. The molded lettering is clear and complete. The character name engraving on the back, the copyright text on the soles of the feet, and the brand logo on the waist and abdomen are all intact and not worn down.
Collectible Value Positioning
This is a highly representative Showa-era soft vinyl figure from the Go Nagai Mazinger series. It differs from the reissues released by Bandai after the 1990s: the reissues have differences in the texture of the vinyl, the mold texture, and the engraving layout. The original 1974 Popy first edition has been decreasing in quantity each year, making it a classic basic collectible in the Japanese retro mecha collection. It comes with a complete original copyright stamp and the patina of aging, authentically preserving the manufacturing process and era feel of old Japanese toys from the 1970s.
