The Roman lagynos (plural: lagynoi) was a specialized, elegant ceramic vessel form that flourished during the late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial eras, particularly from the 1st century BCE through the 3rd century CE. Characterized by its wide, low-slung, squat body, a sharply defined shoulder, a long, narrow neck, and a single vertical loop handle, the form was highly optimized for pouring liquids. While heavily influenced by earlier Greek prototypes, Roman artisans adapted the shape to suit the tastes of the Western Mediterranean, producing both fine, slip-coated tableware for elite dining and more rugged, coarse-ware versions for daily utilitarian use.
Functionally, the lagynos served primarily as a decanter for wine and fine oils, prized for its anti-glug pouring action enabled by the elongated neck. In the context of Roman social life, these vessels were central to the convivial banquet (convivium) and Dionysiac festivals, frequently depicted in Roman mosaics and wall paintings alongside grapes and musical instruments as symbols of festivity and abundance. Beyond the dining room, its distinctively stable, low center of gravity made the lagynos an ideal container for maritime transport and travel, preventing spilling on unstable surfaces and allowing it to be easily packed into ship cargoes or picnic baskets.
