Cote d'Ivoire - Ivort Coast - Costa d'Avorio
Guro/Baule Etchnic Mask
hand carved in wood
in very good conditions
Historic Notes
Traditional African mask in the Guro or Baule style from the Ivory Coast—a mask made of rough wood with colored pigments, often yellow (as in this case), blue, and red. These extremely rare masks are used in ritual and ceremonial contexts. The upper part features a bird with a snake in its mouth, typical of the Guro style. This mask is a highly prized piece of tribal art, highly collectible and used as an interior decoration. These masks are often associated with the Zaouili dance, a traditional performance representing feminine beauty.
In these African masks, a figure (in this case a colored bird) biting a serpent generally symbolizes power, wisdom, spiritual protection, and control over the forces of nature. In many African cultures (such as those of West Africa), the serpent is not a symbol of evil, but a powerful entity associated with fertility, rain, and the continuity of life.
dimensions are 14 x 18 x 52 cm. - weight approx 2 Kg.
