A refined lacquered tabako’bon 煙草盆 (smoking set).
The rectangular box is fitted with a brass rectangular handle and hinges. The upper surface holds a removable copper brazier with a loop handle, its domed cover pierced with petal-shaped openings and surmounted by a chrysanthemum-shaped knob. It is accompanied by a smaller matching ash or match holder finished with a wooden rim.
The front of the box is fitted with one large and two smaller drawers, finished with pull rings and a hirute-shaped bail handle. The front is also equipped with hooks supporting a brass and bamboo kiseru pipe.
The entire surface is finished in glossy black rôiro’urushi 蝋色漆 lacquer, enriched with gold fundame 粉溜地 (matte lacquer).
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (first half 19th century).
Dimensions:
Height 27 cm, Width 26 cm, Depth 16.1 cm.
In good restored condition, with minor wear consistent with age, including small areas of lacquer loss along the rims. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
