Jean Henri, baron Ecker d’Eckhoff (Hans Heinrich Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen, Circa 1750-1790)

German aristocrat, writer and active freemason in esoteric and masonic circles of the late 18th century. Jean Henri, baron Ecker d’Eckhoff belongs to this generation of German authors heavily influenced by the French Enlightenment culture. Moving in European central masonic and Rosicrucian circles, he was linked to mystic and initiatic currents that developed around the high degrees of Freemasonry in the 1770s-1780s.

He is mainly known for his masonic and theatrical writings, published in French and German, bearing witness to the intellectual cosmopolitanism of European Freemasonry on the eve of the French Revolution. His principal work: Le Franc-Maçon prisonnier (The Prisoner Freemason) (The Hague, 1777). A freemasonry drama in several acts, this work is one of the rare known examples of 18th-century theatre explicitly inspired by Freemasonry. The work develops initiatic, moral and fraternal themes specific to the masonic sensibility of the era.

State: Previous faint damp staining traces; otherwise fine condition. Rare and precious gathering. See photos for details.

Specialized in bibliophilism and autographs, the presented art guarantees authenticity and the highest descriptive rigor for each piece. Whether rare books or manuscripts, each lot benefits from bespoke protective packaging for perfectly secure shipping.
