About the artist
Akiyama Iwao (1921–2014) trained first as an oil painter before woodblock printmaking under Shikō Munakata between 1959 and 1965 reshaped his whole approach. From then on he worked in a folk-art register — black sumi on rough mulberry-fleck washi, sparing red accents, gentle humour — and became internationally beloved for his owls, cats and wandering monks. This 2014 design dates to the final year of his life.
