武运长久 千人针A thousand-stitch needle that traveled to the Chinese battlefield in 1937. A gift from the Chiba Prefectural Women's Education Association. It is extremely historically significant. This was a prayer item for soldiers; as prisoners of war, these thousand-stitch needles could not be confiscated because they were sewn stitch by stitch by mothers, wives, and daughters, containing blessings and hopes.
From the perspectives of folklore, cultural anthropology, and religious studies, the Thousand-Person Needle is interpreted as a "collective prayer" (ごうりききがん) that achieves a specific purpose through the joint prayer of many people. The similar "Thousand-Person Power" letter-sending prayer also possesses the nature of a collective prayer. Regarding the Thousand-Person Needle, some argue that it particularly emphasizes the symbolic meaning of gathering the power of women (妹の力).[8] Furthermore, some scholars have pointed out that people may have held expectations regarding the magical power associated with fabric, thread, and the color red. There is also an understanding that there may be a cultural connection between the Thousand-Person Needle and the prayer ceremony of offering a thousand cloth banners to shrines, known as "Thousand Banners" (千人針).[9] The core meaning of "long-lasting military fortune" is not the expectation of achieving great military exploits on the battlefield, but rather the essential purpose of praying for protection from bullets and safe survival. In this regard, some have also commented that the thousand-person needle was originally a prayer custom created in peacetime to avoid conscription, which was transformed and developed in the context of wartime[2].
