卖家的描述
一尊 exceptional roman marble head of a bearded philosopher. With aged features, a high forehead, furrowed brow and deepset eyes, with sunken cheeks, the beard and moustache falling in comma-shaped curls, the short curly hair set high on the crown and spiralling out to the nape of neck. | Roman Imperial Period. 1st-2nd Century A.D.
Roman copy of a Greek original. Probably Epicurus (341-270 BC), greek philosopher that must have been honored by a portrait statue made late in his lifetime or soon after his death. Epicurus is best known for arguing that pleasure—defined as a sense of emotional tranquility and the absence of pain—was the greatest good. He had many followers among upper class Romans, and images of him were displayed in the home to serve as inspiration. This portrait head came from a statue that was probably kept in the residence of a wealthy Roman interested in Epicurean philosophy .
