要理解“半速母带压制”这个术语，我们首先需要了解母带唱片在母带复制过程中的基本原理。简单来说，为了创建母带，铝箔盘被放在切割机上，这个机器被称为母带车床。车床切割头将源波形刻写进涂层中。完成后，涂漆母盘用于创建将来用于制造黑胶唱片的模具。

整个过程高度依赖专业技术，需要极高的精度。半速母带将整个过程放慢到原速度的一半。换句话说，典型的33 1/3 RPM的唱片将以16 2/3 RPM进行刻录。源材料也会被降低速度（降低音高），这意味着最终的录音在回放时仍会听起来正常。

在这个极为复杂且漫长的生产过程中，还有许多因素会影响声音质量，但本质上以半速母带进行母带处理会得到一种更为优越的声音记录，在低至中频段更丰富、饱满，上段频段则更柔和。立体声声场大幅增强，整体声音更集中、引人入胜。“以半速切割意味着源录音中大约在17 kHz的信息实际上被记录在8.5 kHz处。这与反馈到达临界点相距甚远。因此，相较于以普通速度录制，半速在黑胶唱片上实现了更准确、开阔的高频响应。”
