Antiqu e Japanese Cast Iron Tetsubin Tea Kettle — Signed Ryubundo-zo 龍文堂造 — Arare Pattern — Meiji Era, Kyoto

【Item Details】

Maker: Ryubundo (龍文堂) — "Ryubundo-zo" (龍文堂造) engraved on interior of copper lid
Origin: Kyoto, Japan
Period: Meiji Era (late 19th – early 20th century)
Material: Cast iron body / Copper lid / Copper knob

【Measurements】

Height (with handle): approx. 21 cm
Width (body): approx. 19 cm
Lid diameter: approx. 9 cm
Weight: approx. 1,500 g

【Features】
A classic Ryubundo tetsubin in the beloved maru-gata (丸形) — round body form — covered entirely in the traditional arare (霰) hobnail pattern. The evenly spaced raised dots cover every surface of the iron body, creating the tactile, sculptural quality that defines the finest Meiji-period cast iron work.
The copper lid features a distinctive serrated edge and is fitted with a pumpkin-form (kabocha-gata) copper knob seated on a cast lotus-petal base — a refined and unusual detail that sets this piece apart from standard Ryubundo examples.
The signature "Ryubundo-zo" (龍文堂造 — "Made by Ryubundo") is clearly and deeply engraved on the interior of the lid, legible without magnification. Ryubundo, founded in the Edo period and based in Kyoto, is universally regarded as the most prestigious name in Japanese cast iron craftsmanship. Authenticated signed pieces are increasingly rare and actively sought by collectors across Europe and North America.

【Condition】

Overall: Fair antique condition
Exterior: Significant red-brown oxidation and surface rust throughout the body and handle, consistent with age and long-term storage. The arare pattern remains clearly visible across the full surface.
Interior: Water scale deposits and surface rust present. No holes or cracks detected.
Lid: Copper lid with natural green patina (verdigris). Minor scratches from use. Knob intact.
Handle: Sturdy iron bail handle, no cracks or breaks.
Recommended for display and collector use. Sold strictly as a decorative antique.

【Shipping】

Ships from Kyoto, Japan via EMS (Japan Post)
Carefully wrapped and double-boxed for safe international delivery
Usually ships within 3 business days of payment

【Note】
This is a genuine antique item. Surface rust, patina, and wear are inherent to its age and authenticity. Please review all 13 photographs carefully before purchasing. All sales are final.
