Ceremonial and OLD Ritual Rice Sickle with pamor
Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from Bali (this particular one is from Northern part of Bali). This cutter would only be used on the first cutting of the season. As with most of the rice cultivators in Indonesia it is a great deal of ceremonial and ritual importance is given to this act, The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is still quite sharp. Circa100 years old. i am always fond of these sorts of things as they serve to remind us that rice is something more than what we get nowadays in the supermarket.
Futhermore this is an interesting Antique Balinese steel Ceremonial Rice Cutter / Knife The knife was originally purchased in Jakarta by me in 1990's in an antique shop in Bali. This Ceremonial Rice cutter is particularly unique since it has pamor. I conservatively estimate the knife dates around 1900.
Harvesting of rice is usually and solely done by women who hold the tool just below the metal attachment with the long curved wooden end facing toward their body. They grasp the plant with their other hand, allowing the tool more precise control of the cutting. Balinese culture thrives on rice production as their primary food source but also as a primary trade commodity (exept from tourism nowadays…)
This beautifully carved piece of wood was used as a hand-held rice cutter in the rice fields of Bali. The wood has been worn down with use in places. Though I offer only high quality merchandise because of the nature of old ethnic items this item may contain some imperfections, these just add to the character and authenticity of the item.
