Rare Shell Fishhook
Santa Ana Island, Solomon Islands, early 20th century (estimated), field collected 1998
An exceptionally rare fishhook carved from marine shell, collected on Santa Ana Island in the southeastern Solomon Islands in 1998. Fishhooks of this type represent a remarkable blend of practical craftsmanship and deep maritime knowledge, developed over generations by skilled island fishermen.
Beautifully fashioned from a single piece of shell, the hook displays a smooth surface and subtle wear consistent with age and use. Organic fishing equipment was often heavily used and frequently discarded, making surviving early examples increasingly difficult to obtain today.
Based on form, patina, and provenance, this piece is believed to date from the early twentieth century or earlier. It stands as a tangible reminder of a period before modern fishing materials transformed traditional island life.
A rare and highly collectible artifact from one of the Pacific’s most fascinating maritime cultures, with excellent field provenance.
Provenance: Santa Ana Island, Solomon Islands; field collected in 1998. A private collection since acquisition.
